Sedbergh
Stamps
Sedbergh's history can be traced back to the Doomsday times, with the derivative of the name coming from Norse "Set-Berg", loosely translated this means "flat top hills" there are certainly plenty of them around here! The area being a walkers paradise, with a lot of open common land, Sedbergh is located on the Dales Way Route.

Just up the road from the image above, England's highest open waterfall, Cautley Spout can be seen, a glorious site on a sunny day, standing at 200m or so with water cascades through various falls.

These days is a small market town, Sedbergh is actually England's only Book Town. One of the best being Westwood Books, which was originally the old cinema. However there are many more scattered around the Main Street. The status of Sedbergh as a book town came around in the 2000's as the foot and mouth crisis took hold, and and a group of people looked to find a way of attracting visitors to Sedbergh.

Until then the thriving industry within the area, was sheep farming and the likes of Farfield Mill being owned by the Dover Family until the 1930's. A wonderful place these days to explore crafts and such....

Cricket anyone? Sedbergh has one of the top 50 cricket grounds in the world, part of the school, Lancashire play county Cricket each year here nestled here in the Howgills.

The Howgills, well they are a group of hills in the area, and the name derives once again we believe from Norse origins. But over the past 20 years or so, walkers have named the fells the Howgill's. - Howgill itself a small village close by.

Stamps, well like probably many collectors our journey began as a child with the help of my parents, and an atlas, many hours were spent learning about where some of these countries were. Placing them in to an album, without too much care or thought at times. My Uncle was and still is an inspiration for stamp collecting and I still look in awe at his one country collections. However like many, teenage years, University etc all take over and those childhood albums became forgotten for a couple of decades.
